It’s all about the heroes

When you are searching for costume ideas, where do you look for inspiration? Do you look to books, or movies, or a favourite television show? Do you come up with a way to imitate or honour a favourite character or do you just let your imagination run wild?

Over the last several years, there has been a fairly consistent theme when it comes to costumes, especially Q’s outfits. With the exception of his first couple of Halloweens, he has always been allowed to choose his own outfits, and it is really interesting to me to see where his preferences lie.

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise to anyone who reads us regularly that most years have had either a Star Wars or a superhero theme to them. I will admit, I’ve gone a bit Disney inspired as well, but M and Q pretty much always do Marvel. I love watching Q bring his favourite characters to life. In our house, with the exception of a villian or two, it’s all about the heroes.

Last year, for example, after watching The Wolverine and X-Men movies on Netflix, Q decided that he had to be Wolverine. Since he wasn’t the character de jour, we had quite the interesting time finding his outfit, but after much perserverence and searching, we finally did.

The year before that, Q went as Captain America, and I was a lemur. Actually, I told some kids I was King Julian from All Hail King Julian and Madagascar without my crown, and they loved it.

The year before that, we had a family superhero theme going on. My husband was Captain America, Q was Thor, and I was Supergirl. This was before the series started, but now that I know about it, I have added it to my Netflix playlist. Have you seen it?

Rewind even further and you will run into our Disney theme. Q was in a Star Wars phase, so naturally, Darth Vader was a natural choice.

That brings us to this year. Q has been watching the series Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on Netflix  and has been learning about all kinds of characters, including Black Panther. After watching lots of episodes, and the new Captain America: Civil War movie, he got really into Black Panther. Somehow, we lucked upon a Black Panther costume last month, and since he is a lesser known character, we snatched the costune up and Q has been eagerly waiting to wear it. He figured that he might be the only Black Panther around, and he was right!

The other thing that Q has been SO excited about and has been waiting to share with you guys is the release of Skylanders Academy. Q has been a hardcore Skylanders fan since the very first game. I think he was 4 when he first started playing the games and has gotten every one since then. Q made it his life goal when he was 5 to collect every Skylander that was available, and due to the fact that his mum and dad are suckers for him, and with the help of some awesome people at our local videogame store, he actually did. Can you say ka-ching? Oh my poor wallet.
When I told him that Netflix was coming out with a new series about his favourite video game, he could hardly contain his excitment. Skylanders Academy follows the heroic adventures of the Skylanders team, a ragtag group of heroes with unique elemental skills who travel the vast Skylands universe, protecting it from evil-doers. They achieve victory by setting aside their egos, learning to trust one another and fighting as one to maintain harmony and balance in the land.

It is full of his favourite characters – Spyro, Jet-Vac, Pop Fizz, Eruptor, and Stealth Elf. Q wanted to tell you a bit about the show in his own words too. The show follows our heroes as they learn how to be Skylanders and defeat everyone’s favourite villain Kaos. They have to learn how to be a team, while they train together at the Academy. One thing I really like about the show is that Skylanders from different games are in it, guys like King Pen from the new Skylanders Imaginators game, and Kaboom from Trap Team. The show is exciting and funny and I can’t wait to watch all 12 episodes.

I’m sure once he is done, he’ll be (im)patiently waiting for Season 2 in 2017.

Q actually got surprised today with a Spyro costume from Skylanders, so he was lucky enough to get the opportunity to wear two costumes for Halloween, which excited him beyond measure.

What a better way to celebrate the release of an awesome new series than to dress up as your favourite character? Have you dressed up as any of your favourite show characters?

We are a part of the Netflix StreamTeam, and get to share some of our favourites with you each month. We do receive some fun perks from Netflix for being part of the team, however, all opinions and thoughts are our own, and as always, we’re sharing because we truly think you will enjoy it.

Dressing up is a way to let your imagination be wild. Be all that you can be! Its fun. Live life be a Dragon, or a Unicorn or a Sun or anything you want.
