Finding some needed motivation and a Netflix Giveaway!!

A new year means some new goals, right? I actually try to make and update my goals all year round, but I think that the start of a fresh new year is always a good time to look at those things that you’d like to get done and really solidify a plan. I think that it is a great time to get yourself motivated and inspired, and to do the same for your family. It may be time to remind yourselves to chase your dreams, to never give up, or to find something you are passionate about and want to learn more about.

Maybe your kids want to save the world? I know mine does. He has become a really passionate advocate ad supporter of animals and cares deeply for the creatures of the wild. He adores the Wild Kratts (of Zoboomafoo and Wild Kratts), and they have done so much for him in terms of animal education and knowledge. Being able to learn more about wildlife is something that he really enjoys, and as a mum, I love to encourage that.

Recently, he has started to watch the Planet Earth series on Netflix. He started with an episode on sea creatures, and was quite happy to regale us with things that he had learned. He’s only watched a couple episodes so far, but he informed me that it was cool and that he had “added it to his list”, an action that is reserved for only the coolest of shows. I’m sure that once he is slightly less occupied with the new seasons of Ever After High and Dragons Race to the Edge, we will be learning lots more animal facts.

I will admit, I feel like I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately. I’ve got a surgery on my hand coming up that I’m not incredibly excited about (but really, how is excited about surgery, am I right?) and it just feels like I can’t quite get things right. Apparently, what I needed was a few days with some inspiration, based-on true story movies to remind me that things are never quite impossible as they may seem, and that when you are willing to open your heart and mind to new possibilities, great things will find you.

McFarland is one of those movies. Based on the story of a coach who moves his family to a small, pretty poor town to take a new job teaching at a high school after he is fired from his last position, and develops a group of kids into a cross-country running team against some pretty huge odds, this movie is one not to miss. I loved it and found myself really invested in the characters and story.

This movie, along with Soul Surfer, really reminds you that when you want something bad enough, you will find a way to make it happen.

Soul Surfer is one that I’ve had on my list to watch for ages but just never really got around to watching, for whatever reason. The other night, I was having a bit of a pity party for one, and decided to watch this. Man, did it ever hit me in the feels. This is the story of Bethany Hamilton, a very promising young surfer who is just starting to follow her dreams when the unthinkable happens. How Bethany finds the course to not only fight for her dream, but inspire so many along the way was both a gut punch and a spirit lifter at the same time. It got me thinking that sometimes what seems like the loss of one dream is simply a way of forcing you to make room for a new one. I highly, highly recommend both of these movies to you.

Both of these movies were also great examples of why you never want to quit, and that when you fall, no matter how hard you land, you always pick yourself back up again and keep going. I witnessed this attitude today watching my little dude learning to skate. No matter how many times he fell, he picked himself up off the ice and got going again. It was pretty amazing, and a lesson that we could all benefit from, honestly.

I’m working through Midsomer Murders, series 14, of 15 (on Netflix, the show itself is on series 18). Love British drama, especially British period drama!

I love comments! Care to share your thoughts?
